Celebrate an Historic Romance Valentine's Day Dinner

Thank you to all those who attended the Rey Center’s Valentine’s Day Fundraising Dinner celebrating the historic romance of Margret and H.A. Rey:  Hans and Margret knew each other as children in Hamburg, Germany, but didn’t reconnect again until they were both in their twenties, in Rio de Janeiro. There, the two artists worked and lived together with two pet marmosets. After they were married, the Reys moved to Paris where they developed a new manuscript about a curious little monkey. On June 12, 1940 the Jewish couple fled Paris on bikes with only food and their beloved manuscripts on their backs. Two days later, Paris was seized by Nazis. The Reys eventually reached their destination, New York City, where the manuscript about a mischievous little monkey became the well-loved story, Curious George. This August would mark the courageous and creative couple’s 75th wedding anniversary.

Well, our celebration was a total success!  The Valentine’s Day Dinner was held at Don Jasinski’s elegant home, featured entertainment by Maureen Brennan, food by Wild Coyote Grill, beer from Woodstock Inn & Brewery, chocolates from Clay’s Chocolate Shop and wonderful raffle prizes from donors like Wild Coyote Grill, Sport Thoma, Ski Fanatics, Sugar Maple Spa, Mountain Laurel Flowers, I Dream of Beading, Mad River Tavern, Waterville Valley Golf Course, Waterville Valley Nordic Center, Stone Gate Vineyard & Winery, and more! We’d also like to thank our generous individual sponsors, Don Jasinski, Chris Larsen, John Irish, Antoinette Fallon, Lisa Reid, Margaret Turner, Philip Boulter, Joe Ciffolillo, Al Larsson and Joan Sweeney (I hope we’re not forgetting anybody!).  Thanks to all of our sponsors, our tireless volunteers (especially Rey Center Board Members) and all those who attended the event, the Rey Center was able to raise over $5,700 to support our art and science programs in one memorable evening!  (For those of you who couldn’t make it, don’t worry; there’s always next Valentine’s Day!)
